POPSI (Postulation Based Permuted Subject Indexing)
Developed by Ganesh Bhattacharya in 1979
In this blog post, I will describe all about Popsi, its basic as well as the advanced concept of Popsi in library science. This post is useful for Library and information science students for preparing for their University exam and also important for various competitive examinations NTA NET library science.
What is POPSI/ POPSI means
Popsi is described as Postulation based permuted subject Indexing. It means it is subject indexing for making an Index of a subject. This subject indexing is based on Dr. S.R. Rangathan's Postulates and Principles of the general theory of classification.
Need of POPSI
The chain indexing was developed by Dr. S.R. Ranganthan, has inherent weakness of disappearing chain. The information scientists at the DRTC (Document Research and Training Centre) addressed this issue and finally, POPSI was developed. POPSI was developed by Ganesh Bhattacharya. POPSI was developed in 1979.
POPSI does not depend on the class number but is based on Ranganathan's Postulates and Principles of the general theory of classification.
Elementary Categories of POPSI
- D = DISCIPLINE = An elementary category that includes the conventional field of study. E.g. Library Science, Biotechnology, Physics, Geography
- E = Entity = that includes materials. E.g. Eye, Book, Plant
- P = Property = that includes the attribute of qualitative or quantitative. E.g. Power, Property, Capacity
- A = Action = that includes the concept of doing. E.g. Treatment, Function, Selection
POPSI TABLE
0 = Form modifier
1 = General Treatment
2 = Phase Relation
2.1 = General
2.2 = Bias
2.3 = Comparison
2.4 = Similarity
2.5 = Difference
2.6 = Application
2.7 = Influence
3 = Time modifier
4 = Entity modifier
5 = Place modifier
6 = Entry
7 = Discipline
STEPS OF POPSI
- Analysis
- Formalization
- Modulation
- Standardization
- Preparation of EOC (Entry for organising classification)
- Decision about TA (Tearm of Approach)
- Alphabetical arrangement (Entries for associative classification)
Working of POPSI
Title :- Chemical Treatment of Tuberculosis of Lungs
- 1st step Analysis
In this step we are going to analyse the key terms from the title and defined its elementary
categories.
D = Medicine
E = Lungs
P = Tuberculosis
A = Chemical Treatment
- 2nd step - Formalisation
In this step we will formalise the above categories for further steps.
Medicine(D), Lungs(E), Tuberculosis(P), Treatment(A)
- 3rd step - Modulation
Medicine(D), Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), Disease. Tuberculosis(P), Chemical Treatment(A)
- 4th step - Standardisation
In this step we will assign starndard term.
Medicine(D), Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), Disease. Tuberculosis(P), Chemotherapy = Chemical Treatment(A)
- 5th step - Preparation of EOC (entries for organising classification)
7Medicine(D), 6Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), 6.2Disease. Tuberculosis(P), 6.2.1Chemotherapy = Chemical Treatment(A)
- 6th step - Decision about TA (term of approach)
Here we will specificy the term of approach from statndard term
Chemical Treatment see Chemotherapy
- 7th step - Preparation of EOC (entries for associative classification)
Here we will prepare the final visible entries
Lungs
7Medicine(D), 6Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), 6.2Disease. Tuberculosis(P), 6.2.1Chemotherapy
Tuberculosis
7Medicine(D), 6Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), 6.2Disease. Tuberculosis(P), 6.2.1Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy
7Medicine(D), 6Man. Respiratory system, Lungs(E), 6.2Disease. Tuberculosis(P), 6.2.1Chemotherapy
Chemical Treatment
See chemotherapy
- 8th step - Alphabetical arrangement
Here we will arrange the EOC in alphabetical arrangement
